After I graduated from high school, I was not sure as to what my major would be. When I went to a junior college, I pursued nursing. It was not necessarily my dream, but I thought I would be good at it. I liked caring for people, and medicine and anatomy always interested me. After a year of majoring in nursing, I decided that nursing was not my calling. After thinking about what really made me happy in life, I realized that music had always been my passion. Not only was music a passion, but teaching and helping others was a passion. So, I decided to put those two together and major in music education.
What I like most about teaching is that I get to help others, watch children grow, and teach them about something that I am passionate about. Ever since I was little, I liked to help others. Whether it was helping the kids in my Sunday school class or helping fellow musicians, it was something that I enjoyed and was good at. It is always satisfying watching others grasp a difficult concept, knowing that I was able to teach them.
Some high-quality qualities that I possess for teaching are patience, charisma, kindness, a passion for music and education, and knowledge. Since I have been helping other for a long time, I have had to learn to be patient with all types of people and learning styles. My confidence of public speaking will help me to feel more comfortable in front of a classroom. In addition, my passion for both music and teaching will help me to become the best teacher I can be.
The teacher that influenced me the most was my fifth grade music teacher, Mrs. Eaton. Mrs. Eaton had all the qualities of a good teacher. She was kind, patient, funny, caring, and above all, she wanted her student to succeed. She was the teacher who sparked my love for music. She encouraged her students to excel in music and she helped them along the way.
Some of the experiences that have had the greatest impact on me were, branching out of my comfort zone and working with small groups. Every since I was a young child, I have been performing. Although that may seem easy, it was a little difficult for me. I had never been in front of a large audience, and I was always shy. Ever since that first experience, I have become more comfortable with performing and speaking in front of large audience. Now, I can do both of those with no fear. These experiences exposed me to new opportunities, and helped me to develop communication and confidence skills.
I believe that learning is more than just repeating facts. I think learning is about truly understanding and applying ideas that are taught. Another key element of teaching is to learn how your students learn. What may work for one may not work for another child. It is important to have multiple teaching strategies available to students.
